Vasculitis: Publications of the GUSTO study

The GUSTO study represents groundbreaking research in giant cell arteritis, offering new insights into diagnosis, treatment strategies, and long-term patient outcomes. This curated collection of publications documents the clinical concept study's findings and their implications for managing this challenging form of vasculitis. Vasculitides

auch für Betroffene interessant

My current research interests are in Diagnosis, Treatment and Monitoring of Large Vessel Vasculitis (LVV) such as Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu-Arteritis (TAK). A second focus is on Diagnosis and novel treatments of ANCA-associated Vasculitides. In 2009, I had the privilege to spent a sabbatical of 6 months with Prof. Loïc Guillevin in Paris, one of the world-known experts in Vasculitis and former head of the national center of reference for vasculitides in France.

Pregnancy & Rheumatic Diseases

A bit earlier, I intensely collaborated with Prof. Monika Ostensen and later with Prof. Frauke Foerger, head of the pregnancy&rheumatic diseases unit at the Inselspital. We published >20 peer reviewed papers, analyzing transcriptomes, cytokines, immune cells and clinical variables. Recently, we were invited to publish a Review in Nature Rheumatology.

Covid-19

auch für Betroffene interessant

Together with a small group of colleagues (Lisa Christ, Florian Kollert and Stephan Reichenbach) I wrote a protocol about controlling cytokine storm in severe Covid19 cases: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial assessing the efficacy and safety of Tocolizumab/Actemra® in the treatment of acute COVID-19 cases. Due to the very low number of severely ill patients in Switzerland in Sommer/autumn of 2020 I decided to stop the study prematurely.

Behçet’s syndrome

In 1995 I began to have an interest in Behçet’s syndrome. At the University Hospital of Zürich, I was asked to care about a guest physician of Ankara. This proved to become a unique opportunity to get a profound knowledge about this rare form of vasculitis. In 2019 we published about BS in Switzerland.

Connective Tissue Diseases

Regarding connective tissue disease, together with a young and highly motivated clinician (Inge Worni-Schudel) I collected clinical data and sear of the first Swiss cohort of SLE patients back in 1995, which resulted in several publications. Other areas of interest during my time at the University of Bern were T cell inhibition using Abatacept (Orencia®) in Sjögrensyndrome.
